Loleta Safe Routes to School and Connectivity to Tribal Lands
Project Overview
Building a Safer, More Connected Loleta
Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG) is partnering with local agencies, Tribal governments, and community organizations to improve walking, biking, and transportation safety throughout the greater Loleta area. Together, we're developing concept plans that create safer connections between Loleta Elementary School, Main Street, neighboring communities, and the future Great Redwood Trail.
The project is guided by community input and Tribal collaboration to ensure future transportation improvements reflect local priorities, improve accessibility, and support long-term community growth.
Why This Project Matters
Improving Safety Where It Matters Most
Today, many residents face significant barriers to safely walking or biking in Loleta. Limited sidewalks, missing crosswalks, aging infrastructure, and high vehicle speeds near Highway 101 create unsafe conditions—especially for students traveling to and from Loleta Elementary School.
This project identifies practical improvements that make it safer and easier for children, families, Tribal members, and visitors to travel throughout the community.
Looking Ahead
Planning for Loleta's Future
The project goes beyond addressing today's transportation challenges. It lays the groundwork for future improvements that support safer routes to school, encourage walking and biking, strengthen local businesses, and prepare Loleta for new opportunities associated with the future Great Redwood Trail.
By creating a connected transportation network, the community is investing in a healthier, safer, and more vibrant future.
Connecting Schools, Neighborhoods, and Opportunity.
